RESPONSE TO THE SBC SEXUAL ABUSE REPORT

This week, Guidepost Solutions, an independent investigative firm retained by the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) Sexual Abuse Task Force, released the findings of a year-long investigation into the handling of sexual abuse claims by the SBC Executive Committee. The results of this investigation are grievous. The report revealed that Executive Committee leaders did not adequately consider, care for, or protect sexual abuse victims.

I grieve and lament the findings of this report. I thank God for the courage of these victims of sexual abuse and their advocates who have pursued justice and reform for years. Their voices should have been heard long ago. I pray that repentance and reform will follow in the days ahead. In addition, I pray that there will be deliberative steps taken to address these failures beginning with the adoption of the recommendations of the Task Force by the Messengers of the convention at the SBC annual meeting in Anaheim, June 14–15.

At Dawson, we actively pray for and seek to foster a culture that encourages transparency, guards against abuse of any kind, and compassionately cares for victims of abuse. In light of these values, every person employed by Dawson must complete a background check and go through an extensive Child Protection screening and training process every three years. All of our volunteers who work with children ages birth through 19 years must agree to our Child Protection First policy, complete a background check, and complete our Ministry Safe online training process every three years. Please know that as your pastor, I am available for any further conversations at pastordavid@dawsonchurch.org.

CHURCH APPROVES MASTER PLAN

At the Church Conference on May 15, the church approved the Master Plan and Conceptual Budget as recommended by the Ad Hoc Team - Sanctuary and Adjacent Space. The Master Plan is to renovate the Sanctuary, replace the West Building with a new structure, and add a Commons area east of the Sanctuary. This will give a flexible space for worship for generations to come and address many needs such as providing full handicapped accessibility, updating sound and lights, and bringing all systems up to current codes, while maintaining the character of Dawson. The conceptual budget is $24,350,000, to be paid through a combination of savings in the building fund, a campaign to ask members to give over and above their tithes and offerings over the next five years, and a loan. For more information on the Master Plan and the finances, please visit dawsonchurch.org/MasterPlan.

SERVE AT THE WORLD GAMES

The World Games 2022 will be in Birmingham July 7–17. The games will bring an estimate of 500,000 visitors to the Birmingham area. While there will be many ways that we can serve and be the hands and feet of Jesus during this week, Dawson will be partnering with Baba Java coffee. Baba Java is a local coffee roaster and coffee shop in Hoover, AL. They are also the official coffee sponsors of World Games 2022. Through serving coffee at the World Games, we will have the opportunity to welcome guests and reflect the love of Christ. If you are interested in serving or have any questions, please contact Kasey Hagen at khagen@dawsonchurch.org or Josh Parvin at joshua@babajavacoffee.com.

MIDWEEK ADULT BIBLE STUDY Wednesdays, Beginning June 15, 2022, 11:00 a.m., Social Hall

The Summer Adult Bible Study, Living With Assurance, is a seven-week study beginning on June 15. Tommy Sanders will lead this study of the Epistles of John in the Social Hall at 11:00 a.m., focusing on how a person's understanding of Jesus impacts their daily lives in practical ways. John wrote to combat false doctrines about the identity of Jesus and how His identity impacted a believer's everyday life. As a believer we can have the assurance of eternal life by living in the light of our relationship with Jesus.
